Course description

The master’s degree in Finnish Studies concerns itself with the Finnish language as well as Finnish literature and culture in history and the present day. It is a rather research-oriented degree programme as it should encourage and enable students to conduct their own research.

The objective of the degree is to teach linguistic skills that enable linguistic problems relating to Finnish studies to be handled in a considered manner while also teaching expertise in literature and cultural studies for a critical reflection on Finnish literature and culture.

Students should thus become able to work on topics within Finnish studies from different perspectives in an illustrative and application-oriented manner at a research level. A particular focus is placed on comparative and intercultural perspectives, as all German-language research on the Finnish language, literature and culture inevitably gains a comparative dimension.

Finnish Studies in Cologne gains its research profile through:

  • Closing the gap between linguistics and literary studies
  • Possibility of combination with the dual-subject master’s degree “Scandinavian Cultures and Literature”
  • Contrastive analysis of the German and Finnish languages
  • Analysis of Finnish literature in its German translation and German-Finnish literary relationships
  • Many guest lectures by international lecturers
