The English Studies bachelor’s degree programme (which lasts six semesters) examines the English language and English-language literatures from the past and present against the general cultural context. The guiding principle is to provide students with the skills to be able to interact with, within and between the English-speaking cultures of the globalised world in an informed, well-founded, knowledgeable, critically reflective and result-oriented manner.
The main areas of focus in English Studies in Cologne are:
Film and media studies
Literature and natural sciences
Research into modern English-language literatures (post-colonial research)
Gender and women’s studies
(Historical) corpus linguistics
Psycholinguistics
Research into language acquisition
Bilingualism
Literary, linguistic and media didactics
Requirements
English proficiency at level B2 CEFR is required at the start of the programme.
Language proficiency and other requirements
Students must demonstrate their proficiency in English at level B2 (CEFR) and either proficiency in another modern foreign language at level A2 (CEFR) or Latin proficiency comparable to the intermediate Latin certificate (Kleines Latinum) to register for their bachelor thesis.
Perspectives
The aim is to provide students with the academic methods, knowledge and competence in the linguistic system to develop their own professionally relevant strategies for action and to independently monitor the development of academic findings and apply them in a functional way with an eye on their future use in their professional life.
In the bachelor’s degree in English studies, students acquire the knowledge and skills required to analyse and appropriately present complex cultural and linguistic matters. This is primarily achieved through the practical and academic study of the English language and anglophone literary and cultural forms. The degree familiarises students with interpretation and analysis tools, promotes the quick production and structuring of texts and gives them skills in text production and text reception.
The degree programme qualifies students for an internationally oriented, flexible professional activity, e.g.:

In publishing (proofreading, translation, foreign language work)
In librarianship
Within public relations, advertising and tourism
In international organisations
In continuing vocational training
In various educational institutions.
Students are also qualified to continue on to a master’s degree (Master of Arts English Studies).
