Course description
The archaeology degree is offered in Cologne by five archaeological subject areas, Prehistoric Archaeology (UFG), Archaeology of the Roman Provinces (AdRP), Classical Archaeology (KA), Egyptology (ÄGY) and, currently unique in Germany, Digital and Computational Archaeology (ArchIT). Both the close regional links with the University of Bonn and the field monuments offices in the state of NRW, the interdisciplinary orientation at the interface between cultural studies and natural sciences, and the cooperation with national and international project partners ensure a range of courses that is unique in Germany.
The profile of the Department of Prehistoric Archaeology is characterised by:
• Professorships for the Palaeolithic, Neolithic and Metallic Ages
• Research units for the archaeology of Africa
• Laboratories for archaeobotany, dendroarchaeology, archaeozoology and 14C dating
The Institute of Archaeology focuses on the following topics:
• Close technical cooperation between classical archaeology and archaeology of the Roman provinces as well as digital and computational archaeology
• Field of study within digital and computational archaeology and methodological focus in geophysical surveying
The Egyptology department concentrates on:
• The material culture of classical epochs of the Pharaonic period (approx. 3000 to 1000 BC)
• Temple inscriptions from the Greco-Roman period
• Heritage studies and socioanthropology
Students must demonstrate their proficiency in English at level B1 (CEFR) to register for their master thesis. Further language skills are required depending on the discipline chosen (Latin comparable to the intermediate Latin certificate (Kleines Latinum) if KA or AdRP are chosen, Middle Egyptian comparable to the module Egyptian Language and Writing I if Egyptology is chosen). Other language skills may have to be demonstrated upon admission to the master’s degree. You can find more information in the admission regulations.
As a research-oriented, professional degree, the archaeology master’s programme is aimed towards university and non-university archaeological fields. The programme gives you skills that also qualify you for a wide range of professions outside of archaeology. Potential employers within the field include in particular:
• Offices for the preservation and care of field monuments
• Excavation companies
• Museums and universities
• Academic journals
• Research and educational institutions in Germany and abroad
• The degree programme serves as preparation for a doctorate
