Course description

The degree programme aims to achieve a research-oriented, illustrative deepening and expansion of knowledge and skills already acquired in the bachelor’s degree. Its customisation enables a highly individual combination of fields of study to be chosen and teaches in-depth knowledge of ancient history, medieval history, modern history, global history or public history, depending on the chosen discipline.

The aim of the master’s programme in history is to familiarise you with theories and methods within the study of history and in-depth knowledge of your chosen field, guide you towards independent research and enable you to present your findings in an understandable way, oriented towards the target group, in a verbal, written or visual form. You thus acquire important key qualifications for academic and professional practice.

Special arrangements for Global History and Public History:
It is only possible to begin the programme in the winter semester.

Students must demonstrate their proficiency in English at level B2 (CEFR) to register for their master thesis. Additional foreign language skills are required based on the selected study profile. This would be knowledge of a further foreign language at level A2 (CEFR) for the study profiles Ancient History and Medieval History and knowledge of two further foreign languages at level A2 (CEFR) for the study profile Modern History, Public History and Global History. One of the two foreign languages can be replaced by skills comparable to the intermediate Latin certificate (Kleines Latinum). Other language skills may have to be demonstrated upon admission to the master’s degree. You can find more information in the admission regulations.

A master’s degree opens up interesting opportunities for graduates: The master’s degree in history is required for a further academic career and a doctorate. It also enables you to take on more challenging academic duties in research institutions, archives or museums and join the senior civil service. However, the range of professional options is much broader and also includes publishing companies, foundations and the media.
