Course description

The diversity of subjects in the Department of History offers you the ideal basis for creating your individual profile. Master’s students in the dual-subject master’s degree programme benefit from the wide variety of possible combinations with at least 20 other subjects in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. Alternatively, you can also select educational sciences in the Faculty of Human Sciences or geography in the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences as a second subject.

Your history degree aims to expand and deepen your knowledge of history and methodologies with a research orientation while taking into account interdisciplinary problems and research questions.

If you choose a master thesis in history, you can pursue other specialisations in the extension module. Besides epoch- and region-specific modules, modules on language acquisition or relating to the Ancient Languages and Cultures, Medieval Studies or Political Sciences programmes (Faculty of Management, Economics and Social Sciences) can be selected. You can also apply for the a.r.t.e.s. Research Master module.

Students must demonstrate their proficiency in English at level B2 (CEFR) and in two other foreign languages at level A2 (CEFR) to register for their master thesis. If the master thesis is written in Ancient History or Medieval History, one of the two foreign languages must be Latin comparable to the Latin certificate (Latinum). If the thesis is written in Modern History, one of the two foreign languages at level A2 (CEFR) can be replaced by Latin language skills comparable to the Latin certificate (Latinum). Other language skills may have to be demonstrated upon admission to the master’s degree. You can find more information in the admission regulations.

A master’s degree opens up interesting opportunities for graduates: The master’s degree in history is required for a further academic career and a doctorate. It also enables you to take on more challenging academic duties in research institutions, archives or museums and join the senior civil service. However, the range of professional options is much broader and also includes publishing companies, foundations and the media.
