Course description

The media culture studies course involves analysing and discussing media and media content with a particular focus on using approaches from in cultural studies. Why is Shakespeare's Hamlet also referenced in the Simpsons, for example? Why do video games utilise, for example, the principles of theatrical design?

In this way, the course focuses above all on questions dealing with the reciprocal relationship between media, culture and society. The integration of theatre studies into media cultural studies, which has a long tradition in Cologne, is a special feature of the degree offered in the degree programme.

The master’s degree is designed as an in-depth examination of the broad field of media culture and theatre studies, which, in contrast to the bachelor’s degree, places a greater focus on overarching, i.e. trans- and intermedia, questions on more complex constellations in the history of media while also giving particular weight to current research debates. With this in mind, the degree programme can offer a conceptually strong research orientation.

Through the international Summer Institute Cologne, which is offered as a cooperation with Northwestern University (Evanston, USA), and through long-standing and well-established ERASMUS relationships, students are offered a teaching and study space within a systematic and international network.
