Course description
The objective of the Scandinavian Studies programme is to teach cultural studies and literary skills in order to critically reflect on Scandinavian cultures and literatures in the past and the present day.
The degree programme builds on a bachelor’s programme in Scandinavian studies or in related subjects and the skills taught there while aiming to polish language skills, deepen academic knowledge of the subject matter and also critically reflect on the relevant production of knowledge. Students should thus become able to work on topics in an illustrative and application-oriented manner from different perspectives at a research level. A large amount of space is given here to – not least also historical – processes of cultural differentiation, interculturality and cultural contact.
The degree programme is a rather research-oriented degree programme as it aims to encourage and enable students to conduct their own research.
Scandinavian Studies in Cologne gains its research profile through:
- Closing the gap between cultural studies and literary studies
- Analysis of mediality and intermediality in Scandinavian cultures
- Teaching expertise in regional studies for the Northern European region
- Many guest lectures by international lecturers
Students must demonstrate their proficiency in English at level B2 (CEFR) to register for their master thesis. Other language skills may have to be demonstrated upon admission to the master’s degree. You can find more information in the admission regulations.
You can gain important experience in relevant professions and possible future areas of employment by studying abroad and completing a placement, for example. Former students regularly visit us to report on their careers after their studies.
