Course description
Regional areas of focus include the Arab countries of the Middle East and North Africa, the Iranian cultural area, Indonesia and Malaysia, and Turkey. The priority in the SKiW degree programme is to learn the taught languages in such a way that original texts can be examined intensively and active speaking and comprehension are promoted in order to research modern societies in a practical way. In addition to intensive language training, including in a dialect, and a thematic specialisation in selected areas of knowledge, particular attention is paid to methodological skills and theory-led study of topics from Islamic studies.
Other areas of focus are:
- Developments in Islamic religion and law at different times and in different regional contexts
- The plurality and dynamism of Islamic religious practices and beliefs
- Traditional and modern literature from the key Islamic regions
- Social and political transformations and structures in predominantly Islamic regions and areas
After providing you with knowledge about the diversity and richness of Islamic cultures and societies in various regions of the world, as well as in Germany and Europe, our two degree courses will open up interesting new perspectives on current debates. Innovative forms of teaching, practical phases and periods of study abroad (optional) will strengthen your intercultural skills and prepare you for your future endeavours, whether outside of the university or for a doctorate.
