Course description

Areas of focus in Scandinavian studies

  • What do we understand as the “North”?
  • How do Scandinavians understand and communicate with one another?
  • What connects and divides the Scandinavian cultures, languages and literatures? What interactions are there between the Northern European and German cultural spheres?
  • What is special about Scandinavian literature?
  • What did the “North” look like in the Middle Ages?

These and many other questions will be answered in the diverse range of courses. The special feature of the Scandinavian Studies degree programme in Cologne is the strong link between Scandinavian and Finnish Studies, which cover the whole cultural region known as the “North”.

Areas of focus in Finnish studies

  • How does Finnish differ from the Germanic languages? 
  • What languages are related to Finnish? 
  • What is special about Finnish and Finnish/Swedish literature? 
  • What connects and divides the Finnish culture, language and literature from the neighbouring Nordic or Germanic cultures, languages and literatures?

It is assumed that you have sufficient knowledge of English to understand academic texts written in English. You do not need to provide proof of this knowledge.
