Course description

What do the colonisation processes that have been ongoing since the 15th century have to do with the current globalisation movement? What effect have European integration processes had on socio-economic developments in Latin America? What are the links between different aspects of Latin American literature and social events?

Students will focus on these and similar questions in the “Regional Studies of Latin America” course. The degree provides students with basic cultural, literary, social, economic and historical knowledge and methods and also focuses on the following areas:

  • The main regional areas: Mexico and Central America, the Caribbean and Venezuela, the River Plate region, Andes region, Brazil
  • The main historical themes: Gender relations, slavery, independence movements and nation building, media, migration, knowledge and science
  • The main cultural and literary themes: Colonial studies, modernisation processes, media, identity discourse

Students must select one of the obligatory elective subjects and thus have the opportunity to supplement their degree with another speciality from the areas of economics or social sciences. The Regional Studies of Latin America course places a special emphasis on the interdisciplinary themes of transculturation processes, current integration processes in Latin America and relationships with the EU. The degree programme is thus highly interdisciplinary in nature and provides students with a broad understanding of contemporary cultural, social, political and economic globalisation processes.
