Albertus Magnus Professur | Johan Rockström: Scientific Update on the State of the Planet

It is increasingly clear that humanity, our world is not only in the Anthropocene, we are deep into this new epoch, where human activities constitute the largest driver of planetary change. The Anthropocene is no longer only about rising human pressures on the planet. For the first time we are seeing signs of Earth losing resilience, leading to an accelerated rate of global warming. We face a dangerous mix of increased Earth system forcing (e.g., rising heat injection) and Earth system feedbacks (e.g., changes in Albedo, carbon uptake on land, and shifts in cloud dynamics). Together this confirms the dangers of breaching seven of the nine Planetary boundaries that regulate the stability and resilience of the Earth system. And these first indications of Earth losing resilience come before the crossing of large tipping points. The challenge is that these are approaching fast. Six of the 16 scientifically established climate tipping elements are likely to be crossed when exceeding 1.5°C of GMST, a temperature that inevitably will be breached within the coming 3-5 years. Our challenge is to minimize overshoot and do everything we can to avoid tipping points to be crossed. 19:30 Uhr, Hörsaal B (Hörsaalgebäude).

Albertus Magnus Professur | Johan Rockström: Transformation Pathways for a Prosperous and Equitable Landing Within Earth's Safe Operating Space.

Seven of the nine planetary boundaries that regulate the stability, resilience and life-support on Earth are breached. The aggregate assessment by scientists in the 2nd Planetary Health Check (2025) is that humanity is in danger of triggering irreversible (negative) changes to the Earth system (Earth is on aggregate outside of the safe operating space), but has not (yet) reached a point of systemwide high risk of drifting permanently away from the Holocene-like conditions that have prevailed throughout the development of human civilisation on Earth. This gives us a window (though rapidly closing) to transform the world back within Earth‘s safe operating space, „before it is too late“... The conclusion ,though, is that the journey back to „safety“ is not linear, it is exponential, i.e., we need to transform in all socio-economic sectors that impact on the planetary boundaries. In this talk I will focus on the two most urgent transformations with thelargest potential positive impact on bringing the world back within safe planetary boundaries, namely (i) the global food system transformation and (ii) the global energy transformation. 19:30 Uhr, Hörsaal B (Hörsaalgebäude).
